Atlantic Gallery is very pleased to present, Lust for Rust. The seductive surfaces of a rusted door or pile of metal have been a source of inspiration for artists and filmmakers over the course of time. It’s our basic human instinct to elevate the underdog, the abandoned, the neglected, and give them renewed importance.
Rust is the most visible result of entropy, yet rust also protects, often described as a sacrificial element in architecture. Rust is poetic, time-worn, and open to interpretation. Rust is impermanent, transient, organic in its beauty, and gritty: think Wabi-Sabi. We are seeking innovative artworks, 2D and 3D, that utilize painting, sculpture, cartooning or graphic novels, collage, and mixed media that communicates your lust for rust.
The juror and curator, Ellen Hackl Fagan, will award one artist a grand-prize of a one-week solo show at Atlantic Gallery at a future date. A PDF catalog of the exhibition will be available.
Juror/Curator: Ellen Hackl Fagan
Throughout her career, Fagan has had 30 solo exhibitions. She exhibits her artwork throughout the greater New York metropolitan area and Northeast and has works included in permanent public and private collections throughout the United States and Europe. Her work has been the full color feature in print in Post Road Vol. #37 Winter issue. She has been the subject of multiple interviews both on the air and online including WBYX’s radio program out of Yale University, and the New York Public Library’s Artist Interview series. Fagan is a fluent and experienced curator; as founder and director of ODETTA, www.odettagallery.com, she has curated and produced over 70 exhibitions in real life, and more than a dozen exhibitions virtually, showcasing works of 200 + artists. The pandemic inspired her to pivot to a new exhibition paradigm of online curatorial practices as founder of ODETTA Digital on the SHIM Art Network, and ODETTA Petite. In addition to her curatorial exhibition practice, Fagan also offers services enabling artists to better navigate social media tools and to develop their own curatorial voices and gallery spaces, both virtually and in physical spaces. Fagan maintains her studio and curatorial practice in New York City, Indianapolis, and Connecticut.
