ESCAPES
RONI SHERMAN RAMOS
September 7 – 25, 2021
Reception Thursday, September 9th, 2021
Artists talk Saturday, September 25th, 2021; 2pm-5pm
Atlantic Gallery proudly presents Escapes, a series of paintings by Roni Sherman Ramos, illustrating her personal journey over the last 1 1/2 years, including her recovery from the Covid-19 virus. As we emerge on the other side of a pandemic that pushed the boundaries of human resilience, Ramos’ exhibition is evidence that the creation of art reached beyond the constraints of COVID and beyond the political turmoil
that characterized that period. This exhibition will include 18 oil paintings. Size ranging from 8”X10” to 36”X48”.
The paintings are not unlike a diary of personal expressions transformed into a portfolio of color and form that build in intensity, texture and perspective.
Bursts of layered colors and gestural strokes scan to carry the linear progression of thoughts and sensations all throughout the series. Seemingly random shapes and occasional textural grittiness reflect perhaps recovery from hard times, both personal and communal.
Even without specific titles, there is clear evidence of an emotional moment within each painting that gives voice to a point in time that is now lodged in our collective memory.
Ramos lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She is a self-
taught painter. Born in East New York, Brooklyn and a
longtime resident of Prospect Heights, Ramos draws
energy and spirit from the borough she loves. Ramos is
the co-founder of the Betances Health Center, a
primary care facility on the underserved Lower Eastside
of Manhattan. It serves the community to this day and
reflects her role as a healthcare activist. Ramos is a long-standing member and Co-President of the artist-run Atlantic Gallery in Chelsea, N.Y.C. The gallery has been home to three of her solo shows: Drawn to Abstraction, Stop Making Sense and Shape of Color.
Ramos was included in the Master Abstraction Workshop Residencies at Mass MoCA and the Julia and David White Artist Residencies in Costa Rica. If not for COVID-19, she would have participated in the Arquetopia Residency in Puebla, Mexico.
