Phyllis Chillingworth
Oh Joy: An experience in the land of Zihuatanejo
June 5 – June 23, 2018
Opening reception: Thursday, June 7; 5-8 pm
Of Joy, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Phyllis Chillingworth. These new paintings were created following her magical and memorable encounter in the land of Zihuatanejo, Mexico. This experience inspired a group of paintings, filled with the bold colors and startling light of the region. Phyllis is taking a new direction. These powerful paintings do not represent a singular expression; they are an extension of her continued enthusiasm and keen observation of a different part of the world. The pictorial language shifted dramatically in these paintings from her last show; the emphasis is less on brushstrokes and more on ‘color as expression.’ Phyllis reveals: “One of my paintings, titled Gracias a La Vida, (Thanks to Life), is an homage to Violetta Parra, Chilean poet, who wrote this moving anthem. The passion of her music had a powerful effect on my painting. Gratitude and joy soared.”
Meera Thompson
Allegro: Recent Paintings
June 5 – June 23, 2018
Opening reception: Thursday, June 7; 5-8 pm
Meera Thompson’s highly expressive gestural abstractions explore the way imagination transforms visual memories. Conceived as a series and virtually unfurling like Chinese scrolls or unfolding like Japanese screens, each group of images in ALLEGRO recreates the fleeting pace of passing moments. Painted in gouache, ink and water color on heavy cotton papers, the lush painterly textures and sensuously saturated colors of her works evoke the quickening tempo of changing scenes.
ALLEGRO is Meera Thompson’s sixth solo show at Atlantic Gallery. She studied at the Art Students League, graduated from Vassar College, and earned an M.F.A. from Boston University. She teaches Studio Art at the School of Professional Studies at New York University.
