Melissa Rubin
Melissa Rubin, a recent artist-in-residence at MASS MoCA, is also a recent recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation and a New York Foundation for the Arts grants, and a former recipient of a Japan Fulbright Fellowship. Her work has been featured in ARTnews Magazine, Encaustic Arts Magazine, on CBS This Morning, and has been used in performances and movie sets. Her work has been exhibited in solo and numerous group exhibitions. The most recent venues to show her work are the John Molloy Gallery NY, 2017 Art on Paper Fair NY, San Luis Obispo Museum of Art CA, and the Museum of the City of New York. Her art is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Encaustic Art in Santa Fe NM and many of her works are in private collections in the United States and Europe.
My studio is by the ocean in Rockaway Beach in New York City, and I am greatly influenced by, and draw inspiration from, the light and tones of the open sky, beach and water. My work is concerned with the elements I encounter living in an urban ocean environment. I strive to convey a lyrical quality in my use of mixed-media, which includes encaustic, cold wax, powdered graphite, powdered pigments, oil and water-based media.
