Atlantic Gallery is pleased to present liminal, an exhibition of ceramic sculpture inspired by the beauty to be found in the transformation and decay of living forms.
Liminal is a word for the in-between. It describes states, times, spaces, etc. that exist at a point of change – a metaphorical threshold. A refined aesthetic can be found in the eroding and discarded parts of natural forms such as split and cast off seed pods, coral fragments and weathered bones. Walton’s work has long been informed by the construction and wearing away of these metamorphosing pieces of life, exploring her thoughts about exposure and protection, vulnerability and inaccessibility, and the passage of time and beauty. This new body of work has grown out of contemplation of her own aging process, as she transitions into the uncertainty of old age.
Writing about Walton’s sculptures, Pat Rogers stated in the Hamptons ArtHub: “It’s difficult to know where to look first: the colorful interiors that gleam or the aggressively textural exteriors in nuanced monotones found in Joan Walton’s fine art ceramics. Moving between the two doesn’t seem to solve the dilemma as each distinct area commands time and attention. Taken together, the works present an unusual pairing that contributes to a unique and intriguing whole.”
Joan Walton received her BFA with honors from Pratt Institute, majoring in photography. She began working in clay after a career in publishing. Her award-winning ceramic work has been widely exhibited in the U.S., and as a visiting artist in China and Korea.
