CALL DESCRIPTION:

A juried Group Show with Grand Prize: a Solo Show at Atlantic Gallery in NYC’s Chelsea art district.

This past year art has been a refuge for many, a challenge for others, yet creativity prevails as we weather the ongoing storm. As artists we rely on numerous forces intrinsic to our creative process, navigating difficult and challenging periods, giving rise to beautiful and complex works. Now is the time to gather our resources and strength, and rebuild: our lives, our world, our art. Atlantic Gallery is seeking works from this past year (2020-21) that inspire, and embrace, the spirit of rebuilding, renewal and resiliency. Submitted artwork must utilize wax, whether in the form of cold wax, encaustic, or both, in two-dimensional or three-dimensional works. A printed full-color catalog will be provided to each accepted artist. One artist will be chosen by juror, Jerry McLaughlin, for the grand-prize of a weeklong solo show at Atlantic Gallery at a later date.

JUROR: Jerry McLaughlin, painter, award-winning author and co-founder of Cold Wax Academy

Jerry McLaughlin is best known for his powerful, rough, yet subtle paintings built through an intensive working of dozens of layers of paint, pigments, and beeswax, along with additives like earth, sand, and wood ash. His astutely textured, minimalist works are informed by the structural world of adobe, concrete, asphalt, stone, and steel, as well as by the decay, erosion, and weathering of those materials. Deliberate in its minimalism, his work is nonetheless intimate. Its detailed textures invite close examination. We feel the urge to touch them.

Exploring the interplay between beauty and darkness, his work is often inspired by the poetry of Federico Garcia Lorca, Edna St Vincent Millay, Constantine Cavafy, and others.

Though McLaughlin is now a full-time abstract artist, he initially trained as a pediatric critical care physician, an influence still quite palpable in his work. Recognized as an expert in cold wax medium, he teaches extensively, across the US and abroad. In 2017, he co-authored, Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts & Conversations, the first ever comprehensive book on cold wax medium. The book won a 2018 International Independent Publisher Gold Medal and a 2018 International Book Award.

His work has been collected across the US and internationally and has appeared in many magazines and other publications. He is represented by HG Contemporary in New York and DZine Gallery in San Francisco.
