The Carnival
An occasion for joyful reunion
Sarah Jacobs
Tuesday, August 24th – Saturday, August 28th, 2021
Opening Reception: Thursday, Aug 26th from 6 – 8pm
Atlantic Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of The Carnival, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Pittsburgh artist Sarah Jacobs.
Jacobs grew up in a small Pennsylvania town that annually hosted a traveling carnival for one week every August which her mother sarcastically called the social and cultural event of the season. For the children, though, it was exactly that. After a few months of not seeing classmates, they reunited for heady evenings of deep-fried foods, rickety carnival rides that flipped them in every direction, dart games, and the latest gossip. This series consists of oil portraits of the artist’s friends and family surrounded by, overlapped by, and wearing multi-media patterns containing symbols and meanings related to who they are and what they love. Each in their own particular happy environment, these characters gather together at Atlantic Gallery for just one week for The Carnival.
Jacobs has had solo exhibitions in the UK, Poland, and the US, and has taken part in residencies in Colombia, Germany, and New Mexico.
“A variety of complex tessellations overlap and intertwine within a single painting.”- Adam Smith
“There’s a density and lushness to this work… Her hand is incredibly confident.” – Judy Barie
