Sidney M. Russell

In addition to years of painting in her San Francisco studio, Sidney M. Russell has had a long career as scenic painting for the theatre (The San Francisco Opera) and movies. In an attempt to understand the world from as many points of view as possible Sidney works in variety of mediums including oil on canvas, cast aluminum sculptures, wood, paper, acrylic, oil, watercolor, dye, and bronze.

Currently, Sidney works on “quilts” which are composed of oil on canvas paintings sewn together in patterns. The aim of this work is to mix what is generally seen as a soft, feminine craft (the quilt) and the hard-edge imagery of the painting. The juxtaposition of images and mediums reveals new facets of irony and significance in her subjects.
